4 Benefits Of Plastic Drainage Pipes

Thinking of switching to plastic drainage pipes? Here are 4 reasons why you should.

For years, rigid pipes – such as concrete, cast iron and clay – have been the pipes of choice for underground drainage systems.

In the past, they have helped build strong networks that can withstand a great amount of pressure, but recent research has shown that rigid pipes might be contributing to rising failure rates, leaks, and a range of other drainage issues.

But what alternatives are there?

Well, research has also revealed that plastic pipes offer much more in terms of flexibility and durability than their rigid counterparts do.

But how else do plastic drainage pipes compare to concrete, cast iron or clay alternatives?

Our experts at Total Pipeline Systems reveal everything you need to know in this article.

1. They don’t corrode

Corrosion is one of the biggest problems associated with metal piping systems, and it occurs both on the inside and out – affecting their efficiency.

Unlike rigid, cast-iron drainage pipes, plastic pipes don’t corrode, and they offer excellent resistance to most types of chemicals – including most strong acids, alkalis and solvents, as well as fats, brine mineral oils, and alcohols.

Not only will you have a consistently clean water supply, but you’re also guaranteed a steady water flow rate throughout the pipe’s lifespan too – which ensures that the energy required to pump water through the system won’t increase as it ages.

2. They’re better for the environment

The manufacture of plastic pipes requires much less energy than the production of their rigid counterparts – meaning that they have a much smaller environmental footprint and a lower impact on global warming.

In addition to this, at the end of their working life – which can be up to 100 years if they’re maintained well enough – plastic drainage pipes can be collected, recycled, and reworked into other PVC or PE products.

So, if you’re trying to do your bit for the environment, switching to plastic drainage pipes is an excellent place to start.

3. They’re easier to install

Because plastic pipes are much lighter than other materials, they’re much easier to handle.

They can be installed much quicker with so-called ‘trenchless technology’, creating much less disturbance to traffic flows and the environment than more traditional piping systems.

They’re also much safer to work with, and because they’re so much more lightweight than rigid piping options, they reduce the likelihood of on-site accidents.

4. They last much longer

Plastic pipes are known for their durability.

They’re exceptionally strong and maintain their durability throughout their entire service life – which thanks to their non-corrosive, non-conductive properties can be up to 100 years!

So, you can rest assured that the integrity of your plastic pipes is protected no matter where you install them – be it above or below ground.
